Gaseous fuel with luminous bluishik l fl i d d b pink colorflameis produced by
burning rice husk with limited
amount of air.
A small computer fan that
consumes a very little amount of
electricity is used to supply air into
the bed of burning rice husk.
The stove consists of the following major assemblies:
A. Burner Assembly – It is where the gas
produced from rice husk is burned and is
subsequently used as source of heat for cooking
B. Reactor Assembly – It is where the rice husk is burned with limited amount of air
(30-40% of the stoichiometric air) to produce combustible gases, primarily of CO and H2
C. Char Chamber Assembly – It is where the char from the reactor is discharged and is
allowed to cool prior to disposal.
D. Fan Assembly – It is where the fan, which supply the air for gasification of rice husks,
is installed.
E. Grate Assembly – It is the component of the stove that holds the bed of rice husk in
place during gasification and that facilitates the discharge of char after each operation.

DISTINCT TECHNICAL FEATURES OF THE STOVE TECHNOLOGY
It is a second-generation stove technology for domesticcooking;
Burns fuel with less CO2
emission (about 10%) compared
with the traditional direct combustion stove (of about 20%).
Burning of biomass fuel is at low temperature thereby
producing lower amount of NOx.
Reported as the type of biomass stove that has the highest
GHG reduction emission capability.
ADVANTAGE FEATURES
Uses No-Cost Fuel – Rice husk is readily available in mostlocalities and presently can be obtained without any cost.
A i h h ld (4 6 b ) ill l An average-sizehousehold (4 to6 members) will only
require 1 to 1.5 tons of rice husk per year.
Safe to Use There is no danger of explosion since the Safe to Use –There is no danger of explosion since the
stove operates at nearly ambient atmospheric pressure.
Easy to Operate and Maintain Ignition of rice husks can Easy to Operate and Maintain –Ignition of rice husks can
be done in a minute and almost no smoke emission can be
observed duringoperation. gp
Affordable– A unit of the stove costs Rp250.000,00 only.
Controllable– The intensityof the flame can be easily yy controlled by adjusting the fan opening.
Highly Efficient – Thermal efficiency is twice as that of the
traditional rice husk stoves, which employ direct
combustion.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC BENEFITS SOCIOECONOMIC BENEFITS
It can offer solution to the problem of high fuel costIt can reduce household cost on fuel for cooking.
It can create employment for local people in the
production of the stove and in the distribution of fuel,
especially for jobless youth .
It can provide added income for farmers (for the sale of
their rice husk).
Environmental Impacts Environmental Impacts
Disposal of rice husk is properly addressed by gasifying ricehusks And the gas produced isused as fuel and the char husks. And the gas produced is used as fuel and the char
can be used as soil conditioner or be made into biocoal fuel.
Prolonged burning of rice husks produces ash which can be Prolonged burning of rice husks produces ash, which can be
further utilized in the production of low cost material for
construction and insulation.
Eliminate smoke emission from burning of rice husks.
Problem of CO2
emission in the atmosphere is reduced by50 2
py to 70% as compared with that in direct burning of rice
husks.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS
Low price - The stove requires an investment of onlyRp250 000 00 per unit (middle of the prices for single-burner Rp250,000.00 per unit (middle of the prices for singleburner
kerosene and LPG stoves).
Low cost fuel -The cost of fuel is only Rp166.67, which is Low cost fuel The cost of fuel is only Rp166.67, which is
significantly lower than kerosene and LPG (Rp9,000.00 and
Rp2,250,00, respectively).
Low operating cost - Operating cost per hour is only Rp272.77
which is considerably lower than operating kerosene and LPG

High savings – Using the stove over kerosene or LPG stove, a
household can generate a savings of Rp3 043 716 67 (for household can generate a savings of Rp3,043,716.67 (for
kerosene) or Rp743,666.67 (for LPG) in one year.
Short payback period The investment for the stove can be Short payback period -The investment for the stove can be
recovered in just 0.08 to 0.34 year.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
The MJ rice husk gas stove is an alternative in providing
households in a low-cost stove technology that can replace
kerosene or LPG stoves;
Th t f ll d b tibl g f The stove successfully produces combustiblegasesfrom
solid rice husk, which makes it convenient to operate just like
operating an LPG or a kerosene stove;
The flame produced from the stove has a lower temperature
as compared with that of the conventional stoves. p
The stove offers a lot of advantages in terms of social,
environmental, and economic concerns not only to the
households but also to the government as a whole.
The stove is affordable and can provide savings of
743,666.7 to 3,043,716.67 per year per family.
The stove technology is a good alternative for households to
cope with the high energy cost while, at the same time,
addressing CO2
emission problem.
Th h hi h i th b dt f th t i d The char, which istheby-product of the stove,is a good
material in improving the quality of soil in terms of higher
water holding capacity.
This stove technology is a potential means towards zerowaste utilization of rice husks.
